AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE VOLUTE-KRATER
attributed to the group of copenhagen 4223
circa 330 b.c.
The A-side with a nude warrior seated within a naiskos, holding a shield and a helmet, his greaves hanging above, scrolling tendril below, to the left a standing draped female figure with a cista and a fillet, to the right a standing youth with his mantle draped over his shoulder holding a patera and a staff, a female head in profile on the neck amidst florals, a band of rosettes above; the B-side with two seated offering-bearers around a stele topped with a footed bowl and tied with fillets, a palmette complex on the neck, with a band of laurel above; masks on the volutes, white and yellow on the obverse, red and black on the reverse, swan heads on the shoulders framing a band of tongue above a band of ovolo, palmette complexes below the handles, a band of meander with saltire squares below, details in added white and yellow
