A BYZANTINE BRONZE SCONCE AND POLYCANDELON

The sconce cast in the form of an undulating foliate branch terminating in the head of a griffin surmounted by a cross with rounded arms, projecting knobs at each end, the griffin's beak forming a loop from which the polycandelon is suspended, the upper element a cross with disks at each end surmounting a knob and six-pointed star, three of the arms with loops joined to lengths of chain divided by an openwork cross, the chain supporting the thin disk with three open circles for insertion of the lamps
