Lot Essay

A young male shawm player appears in several of Picasso's idyllic paintings in 1965, and in the following year a boy playing a flute becomes a frequent character in his drawings. He is a shepherd boy, and is often depicted serenading an older female. He embodies both the innocence of pre- and early adolescent youth and the awakening of sexual desire. See also lots 486-490.
