Lot Essay

A photo-certificate from Dr. Josef Helfenstein and Dr. Michael Baumgartner of the Klee Stiftung dated Bern, 17 August 1998 accompanies this watercolor.

The present work bears an affinity in style and subject to another watercolor of 1924, Karneval im Gebirge ("Carnival in the Mountains"; coll. Klee Stiftung, Bern). In both works the artist creates the illusion of a relief by shading the areas around the objects in the composition, which include ladder-like fir trees and steeply-roofed Alpine houses.

Klee annotated this watercolor with the designation "Scl", an abreviation for Sonderklasse (or classe) a term he reserved for works he himself considered to be of special quality.
