A ROMAN GOLD AND ONYX CAMEO EARRING
circa 3rd century a.d.
Composed of a plain wire joined to the back of a box-setting, originally forming an earwire above, formed into a loop below and joined to a similar box-setting, the lower set with an onyx cameo of a winged Eros leaning on an inverted torch, the upper set with an onyx cameo of Leda and the Swan, with Leda reclining to the left, raised on her elbows, the swan between her bent knees with outstretched wings
