Lot Essay

Designed in the Louis XV 'picturesque' manner associated with the ornamentistes Juste-Aurle Meissonier and Nicolas Pineau, this frame reflects the mature style of the sculpteur's art circa 1740. A related frame in the collection of Georges Bac, with similarly deep carving, floral trails wrapped around its addorsed C-scrolls and assymetric cartouches, is illustrated in J. Nebout, 'Le Cadre et Le Bois Dor Travers Les Sicles', Exhibition Catalogue, Paris, n.d., pp.81-3.
