Lot Essay

This torchere comes from the Utrecht building designed for the Utrecht Life Insurance Company by Jan Verheul (b. 1860) in 1899-1902. The torchere dates from about 1920, and is typical of the Dutch Nieuwe Kunst period. The Utrecht building was razed in 1974 to make way for a railway station and department store complex.
