Lot Essay

Nicolas Heurtaut, matre in 1753.

A very similar marquise by Heurtaut, reputedly from the Gatchina Palace, St. Petersburg, is illustrated in G. Janneau, Le Mobilier Franais - Les Siges, Paris, 1973, no. 206.

This marquise formed part of the collection of the legendary screen actress Greta Garbo, whose film credits include such classics as The Temptress (1926), Anna Christie (1930), Grand Hotel (1932), Anna Karenina (1935) and Ninotchka (1939). A friend wrote in the introduction to the catalogue of the collection: Color! Color always was the essential component. Other criteria did matter. Quality, condition, proportion, history, practicality--all were important, but colors, shades of rose, salmon, pink and a mossy green--were paramount... The Heurtaut canap with its sinuous lines, comfortable and practical proportions and a shot of bright upholstery would appear to fulfills all of these criteria.
