The associated elements comprising a mirrored plateau, a centre-piece, four ten-light candelabra and four tazza bases: the plateau with a mirrored centre framed by pierced scrolling foliage, on scallop-shell cartouche feet; the centre-piece with a deep-cut crystal glass bowl with an ormolu rim supporting a scrolling foliate-cast seven-light candelabrum to each side, supported by two female figures centred by a sea-shell on two sides, supported by four cherubs riding winged sea-monsters, on an ice-cast shaped base with masks and scallop-shell aprons, on four bearded-men mask feet, inscribed MONBRO to the underside in several places and with various impressed letters; the candelabra each with nine scrolling foliate branches, on intertwined pierced foliate and flower stem, on a shaped triform flower-cast base and scrolling feet; the tazza bases each with an open leaf above a scrolling rock-cast stem, surmounting a tripod base mounted to each corner by a putto playing a musical instrument, centred by a cartouche, on scrolling feet

Lot Essay

The famous Paris firm of Monbro was founded around 1801. Maison spcilae pour ameublements anciens, ateliers de rparations, pendules, bronzes, candlabres, porcelaine de Chine et de Svres, meubles sculpts, bois dors Louis XIV, Louis XV,..., the firm also maintained a shop in London in the 1860's, showing its importance at the time. Monbro supplied Louis-Philippe, the Duchesses d'Aumale and the Palais de Saint-Cloud in furniture, taking part in the 1855 Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie.
A pair of ormolu and pietra dura-mounted 'Boulle' marquetry cbinets-on-stand by Monbro Ain was sold in these rooms 2 October 1997, lot 114.
