The pediment with two towers, concealing the three winding apertures, above an arcaded frieze with figures of saints, the circular dial below, the triple-train movement striking on three gongs, flanked by tracery and towers, above a central grand door, flanked by a small door on each side, on a yellow-coloured velvet base, the interior housing the three gongs
The clock: 16 in. (40 cm.) wide; 23 in. (59 cm.) high; 8 in. (20 cm.) deep
The base: 19. 3/4 in. (50 cm.) wide; 4 in. (10 cm.) high; 10 in. (27.5 cm.) deep

By repute, given by Queen Marie-Amlie (d. 1866), wife of Louis-Philippe, to her physician, an ancestor of the present owner.

The dial of this clock is inscribed Leroy & Fils; the clock was reputedly given by Queen Marie-Amlie (d. 1866), wife of Louis-Philippe, to her physician, an ancestor of the present owner.

Lot Essay

There are several known examples of this clock depicting the Rheims cathedral, one of which is signed Bavozet, dated Circa 1835, now in the collections of the King of Sweden; two others sold in these rooms: 27 February 1997, lot 113, and 29 October 1998, lot 203.
