In the Renaissance Style, Circa 1880
The rectangular shelf with stepped underside carved with acanthus, beading and dentil ornament, above a scrolling foliate-carved frieze centred by a mask flanked to each side by two birds, the panelled jambs each fronted by a semi-naked herm with drapery backing, on a stepped plinth with acanthus leaf border, the hearth opening with silk-covered panel

Lot Essay

This elaborately carved walnut chimney-piece was formerly in the Palace de Heres, Oviedo. An article dated 4 September 1904 written on the opening of the Palace and published in the local Oviedo newspaper, El Carballon, mentions "the monumental mahogany chimney-piece, masterpiece of a Florentine sculptor" seen in the billiard-room.
