A set of fifteen German carved walnut dining-chairs
In the Renaissance Style, Circa 1865
Comprising two armchairs and thirteen side chairs, each with an elaborate shaped cresting centred by an initial or maple leaf in a strapwork and foliate cartouche, above an ecu-shaped padded back, each with a different coat of arms in beadwork, flanked to each side by a baluster-turned upright headed by a finial, the armchairs with padded arms and scrolling uprights, all with a serpentine apron seat-rail, on four baluster-turned legs and feet, joined to the sides and centred by a turned stretcher (15)

These chairs are part of a set of 48 which was most probably commissioned in the 1860s by Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck for Wofsberg Castle. Each back bears a different coat of arms, probably all related to the Henckels: Hugo Henckel (Henckel von Donnersmarck), Wreich (or Wreech), Hardenberg (twice), Studnitz, Brunetti, Kreowitz (or Kreckwitz), Nostitz, Czettritz, Zietowitz?, Coob und Nending?, Armeloetappe?, Guidini?, and two other unidentified families.
