CLESINGER 1re Etude, the back with foundry inscription MAISON MARNYHAC/1 Rue de la Paix and with Bronze Artistique de Paris seal, on a circular spreading socle

Portrait commissions aside, Jean-Baptiste Clsinger (d. 1883) favoured the heroines of the ancient civilisations of Greece, Egypt and Rome as subjects for many of his works. Interestingly, the present bust of an Egyptian maiden is inscribed 1re Etude and is therefore probably an earlier version of the closely-related marble bust sold by Sotheby's, 4 June 1998, lot 151.
