Carpeaux first worked on Jeune Pcheur la Coquille in 1856 while studying at the French Academy in Rome. The style and subject-matter pay homage to both Rude and Duret. In 1858, he exhibited the plaster model at the Salon, and the following year he submitted a bronze cast. The original marble version, exhibited at the Salon in 1863, was purchased by Napoleon III.
