Lot Essay

Elisabeth was the daughter of Andreas, King of Hungary and married Ludwig of Thringen in 1221. She chose to live as an ascetic, following Saint Francis of Assisi, and devoted her life to caring for the needing and sick people in Wartburg, where she lived. After the death of Ludwig in 1227 she went on a crusade and joined the Franciscan Order. In the present lot she is represented as the Queen of Hungary (see E. Kirschbaum, Lexikon der Christlichen Ikonographie, 1974, pp.133/40).
We are grateful to G. Krebber of the RKD for her help in cataloguing this lot.
