The sitter was the daughter of Johan van Scherpenseel and Margriet Essen tot Swanenburg. She married Hendrik, Baron van Westerholt, Heer van Hackfort, Baer and Lathum (1590-1638), on 9 November 1613 (see E.B.F.F. Wittert van Hoogland, Genealogische en Heraldische Bladen. Maandblad voor geslacht-, wapen- en zegelkunde, I, 1906, p.253).
