Lot Essay

Numerous versions of the present composition exist, among which the picture sold in these rooms, 6 May 1998, lot 75, ill.
The panel maker's mark consists of three intertwined circles and also occurs on the support of a still life by Jacob van Hulsdonck, offered at Philips, London, 5 December 1989, and on that of a Crucifixion by an anonymous hand (see exhib. cat. Hasselt, Passie, 1988, no85).

We are grateful to J. Wadum for his help providing us with more information on the panel maker's mark.
