Lot Essay

The scene depicted is taken from Jacob Cats' "Afbeeldinge van het huwelijck en 't geen daer omtrent is, onder de gedaente van een fuyck" (depictions of marriage as a trap), to which the text on the banderole refers (see J. van Vloten, Alle de Wercken van Jacob Cats, 1862, pp.610/611).
