Metropolitan Gavriil of Novgorod and Saint Petersburg (1730-1801) was born into a priestly family in Moscow. He was appointed Archimandrite in 1761 and two years later he became Bishop of Tver. In 1770 he was appointed Archbishop of St. Petersburg and in 1775 he became also Archbishop of Novgorod. On 22 September 1783 he was appointed Metropolitan of Novgorod and St. Petersburg, which was the highest rank among the hierarchs in Russia.
