A peasant girl at a spinning wheel - a study

The present lot is a preparatory sketch for an oil painting depicting a farm interior with mother and children, dated 1862 and documented in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague. Given the fact that collectors at the time preferred the artist's larger Salon pieces, and Jozef Israels generally didn't sign his oil sketches, the present lot was probably signed by the artist at a later date.
