Lot Essay

In 1925 Bomberg produced a series of works connected to the Armenian Church of St. James in Jerusalem. Although not granted permission to paint in the church, he was smuggled in by friends during Easter Week, on Holy Thursday, when he witnessed the Washing of the Feet ceremony. This was performed by the Armenian Patriarch on the bishops to recall Christ washing the feet of the Twelve Apostles on the night of the Last Supper. The large painting The Washing of the Feet, Cathedral Church of St. James, Jerusalem, shows a bird's-eye view of the elaborate and colourful church interior with the ceremony conducted in the foreground.
