Lot Essay

'Munnings retained a soft spot for pigs from his youth when he wrote and illustrated a ballad about the Tale of the Gloucester Spot. He liked the idea of being a pig painter and along with cows regarded them as among the most paintable of animals' (see N. Usherwood, Alfred Munnings 1878-1959, Athenaeum Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, 1987, p.97).
