Lot Essay

Mervyn Levy comments (op. cit., p.40) that 'the artist's portraits of the streets and architectural environs of West London are no less revealing than his portraits of people. 'Hammersmith Bridge' and the river; 'The Old Lyric Theatre' with its billboards; the cars, taxis, and trolley buses with their overhead wires, fix the locality with a permanence which deepens as the images recede in time and acquire the status of the timeless'.

A photograph of the artist sitting in front of the present work is illustrated as the frontispiece to the catalogue of Ruskin Spear A Retrospective Exhibition, held at the Royal Academy, London, March-April 1980.
