Waspitten on the Damrak

Compare with the pastel of almost the identical composition, now in the Gemeente Archief, Amsterdam, which was sold in these Rooms, 24 April 1991, lot 363, and with another pastel sold in these Rooms, 2 July 1997, lot 215. A third pastel, recorded with a photograph in the R.K.D., The Hague, is also related to the present lot.

The present lot shows the Prins Hendrikkade with the pedestrian bridge towards the Central Station (constructed in 1889) in the background. In the left background the building site between the Damrak and the Martelaarsgracht is visible. In the right background lies the small park on the Prins Hendrikkade, wich was laid out in 1883 (cf. Ons Amsterdam, June 1992).
