Lot Essay

In October 1921 Isaac Israels found himself aboard a boat headed for the Dutch East-Indies. In a letter adressed to the Witsens, the artists expressed his amazement about this unexpected adventure: "dat iemand zonder absolute noodzaak z iets doet! Van de 10.000 passagiers is er n zeeziek , en die ne... ben ik !!" (Dolf Welling, Isaac Israels, 1991, p. 20).
