A SILK-ON-LINEN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
American, dated 1805
Worked in cream, green, mustard, brown, pink, silver and black silk threads on a linen ground with a horizontal verse inscribed, "If angels sung our saviours birth/on that auspicious morn/Then let us i___ate their mirth/Now he again is born himself/He humbled to the grave/Made flesh like us to _hew/That we as certainly shall/Have a resurrection too.," above a border of meandering vine and flowers over two birds flanked by foliate surrounds centering "Lowry/Evans" and "Work/1805" above a fruiting tree with coiled serpent flanked by Adam and Eve and two pots issuing flowers, the whole surmounted by addorsed birds perched on trees centering a white stag and enclosed by a border of meandering vine and flowers
