Depicting a female figure, emblematic of fame or success, in a boat with the royal fleur-de-lys being driven by a boatman and accompanied by a putto, with dials for minutes, hours and days of the month, on Vitruvian scroll-cast base with bun feet

Lot Essay

This intersting model is conceived as an allegory of the success of France's sea trade. Another version (sold Sotheby's, London, 25 June 1982, lot 143) also includes a portrait medallion of Louis XVI being held by the figure of fame, which may be missing from this example.
