Lot Essay

Harry Sutton Palmer was born in Plymouth. He studied in London at the South Kensington Schools, later becoming the Royal College of Art. Later in his life Palmer concentrated on landscape painting, in which he was influenced and inspired by the works of David Cox, William Muller and Peter de Wint. Many of his landscapes are views in Surrey, this was a favourite county for Palmer primarily because of its picturesque qualities. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1894, and of the Royal Institute of painters in watercolours in 1920.
