Vase-shaped, on three feet cast in the form of buffalo heads and hooves, the acid-etched surface with niello and vari-colored gold sunbursts, the scroll handles with etched geometric decoration, the vari-colored parcel-gilt interior etched with sunburst and geometric motifs, marked under base 5980/2008
10in. high, gross weight 80oz. 10dwt.

Lot Essay

This cup is recorded as "Love Cup Buffalo Head" in the Tiffany pattern books. 80.50 oz. of sterling were used in the manufacture for a total cost of $225.

A similar loving cup with buffalo-head feet but different surface decoration was sold at Sotheby's, New York, January 20, 1998, lot 29 and previously in these Rooms, January 20, 1989, lot 260.
