Lot Essay

This tankard, in mid 17th century style, was probably commissioned as part of a set of communion silver, which was often made to conform to existing pieces.
In the 19th century, this tankard was used for a short time between 1865 and 1870 for communion at St. Peter's Church, Washington, North Carolina. The tankard's history was recounted in the News and Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina when it was exhibited at a display of ecclesiastical silver under the auspices of the Colonial Dames in North Carolina (circa 1900).
