Lot Essay

In Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers, Patricia Kane records a porringer with marks of both William Simpkins and Samuel Minott and the engraved initials IP to PC which is owned by the Rosenbach Foundation (1998, p. 694 and 897). The similar engraving suggests that these porringers were originally a pair. Kane speculates that since Minott's mark is found on several pieces of his contemporaries' silver, he probably retailed silver made by other smiths.
