City of Everett

Built in 1895 in Everett, Washington, the City of Everett was owned by Standard Oil. The steamer was famous for having received an offer of surrender from the Spanish port of Malaga during the height of the Spanish American war in 1897. Entering the harbor to refill water tanks after sailing from Bombay and unaware that during their voyage the United States and Spain had gone to war, Captain Thomas Fenton was amazed when the Spanish soldiers came to surrender the town to what they thought was an American war ship. The City of Everett sailed out of New York City until 1923. A sketch of the screw steamship, also dated 1915, is in the collection of the Mariners' Museum, Virginia (Sniffen, Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984), pp. 70-71).
