Lot Essay

Born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1777, Malbone's prolific career took him throughout the eastern seaboard of the United States. He began his career in Providence in 1794, and for the next thirteen years travelled throughout Providence, Newport, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Charleston and Savannah working as a portrait miniaturist. In 1801, he travelled briefly to England with Washington Allston. He died in Savannah in 1807.
