Lot Essay

Working principally in the Springfield, Massachusetts area from 1832, Joseph Whiting Stock travelled as far as New Bedford, Massachusetts, New Haven, Connecticut, and Warren, Bristol and Providence, Rhode Island, taking large-scale and miniature likenesses of numerous sitters. Stock was prolific and well in demand, painting over 900 portraits just in the years between 1842 and 1845.
