A native of Philadelphia, Pratt trained apprenticed with his uncle, James Claypoole, in that city between 1749 and 1755, and studied with Benjamin West in London between 1764 and 1766. Prior to his London training, Pratt established his own studio in Philadelphia in 1758, and resumed his career there upon his return to the United States in 1768.
The survival of this conjoined example of the portrait miniaturist's and hair jeweler's art is rare.
