Boldly incorporating carved, incised, gilded, applied bronze and decoration, the cabinet offered here is closely related to a cabinet branded by Gustave Herter (1830-1892) illustrated in Voorsanger, "Gustave Herter, cabinetmaker and decorator," Antiques (May 1995), pl. V, pp. 744-745. The branded example has a similar form but differs from this cabinet by lacking the elaborate splashboard, canted corners and leaf-carved feet. Furthermore, both cabinets were originally adorned with similuated stonework; the cabinet offered here retains its faux malachite plaques while the branded example now bears lapis lazuli applied panels that replace a light-blue composition material.
