Each side enamelled with a representation of the arms of the state of New York, incorporating a United States eagle crest above an initialled shield with the supporters allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice, all above a pair of stars and stripes shields, the sides with gilt and blue enamel rose sprigs, repeated in the center, and a blue enamel and gilt star border around the rim

Lot Essay

The details of the official coat-of-arms of New York, created by the state legislature March 16, 1778, are reflected fairly accurately in this bowl. A bit later China traders imported a fairly large number of stock patterns for the patriotic New York market with generalized state arms.
