The serpentine shaped top with an entwined oak leaf edge and densely carved foliate scroll frieze centered by an armorial crest surmounted by a wolf and issuing foliate scrolls above a carved motto IN PORTU QUIES, on similarly-carved cabriole legs headed by a ruffled cabochon with foliate-carved cabouchon feet, back with later 2in. patch to back edge

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Wilbraham of Woodhey, Chestershire, impaling those of Wilbraham, possibly for Sir George Barrington Baker Wilbraham, 5th Bart. and Katharine Frances, only child of the late Gen. Sir Richard Wilbraham, married in 1872.
