Lot Essay

These chairs with their overall scrolling decoration in low relief imitate English examples of the period, carved in gesso on a gilt surface. The chairs were produced in Canton for export under European supervision and often bear Chinese characters. Similar sets remain at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, Wilton House, Wiltshire and a single chair at Temple Newsam House, Leeds. An example of this model from the Richard Milhender collection is illustrated in C.L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Woodbridge, 1991, p.230, pl.83.

Other chairs of this model were sold in these Rooms, 7 October 1978, lot 148A (a pair), and 17 October 1981, lot 198 (a set of six), and a single example was sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 November 1988, lot 81. A set of twelve was sold by Christie's London, 16 November 1995, lot 52.
