Lot Essay

Born in France, Auguste Edouart (1789-1861) spent the years between 1839 and 1849 in America plying his trade as a silhouettist. He travelled extensively and reproduced the likenesses of patrons in New Orleans, Charleston, Washington D.C., New York and, as this silhouette illustrates, Boston (see Groce and Wallace, The New-York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860 (New Haven, Connecticut, 1957), p. 207.
