With its serpentine facade, dramatic mahogany grain and canted corners with corresponding bracket feet, the chest offered here is closely related to two others (see Kirk, Early American Furniture (New York, 1970), p. 21, no.7 and Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, The Estate of the Late Charles Woolsey Lyon, March 3, 1973, lot 157). Based on its bearing the initials "E.S." on its bottom board, the latter was attributed to Elijah Sanderson (1752-1825) of Salem. This attribution is strengthened by an 1803 invoice written by Elijah that states "..my furniture is all marked with a brand ES on the back of each piece" (cited in Ketchum, American Cabinetmakers (New York, 1995), p. 294.
