A CHIPPENDALE CARVED CHERRYWOOD DESK-AND-BOOKCASE
Maryland, 1765-1785
In two sections: the upper with a broken triangular pediment with circular floral-pierced roundels and Greek key borders centering a pierced leaf and C-scrolled cartouche above a frieze carved with interlacing circles over two glazed mullioned doors enclosing three adjustable shelves, flanked by canted and carved corners; the lower section with a slant-front lid opening to a compartmented interior centering a shaped-panel prospect door flanked by fluted document drawers, eight short drawers, four valanced pigeon holes and two long open compartments, all above a case fitted with four graduated long drawers, with cockbeaded surrounds flanked by similarly canted and carved corners over a conforming molded base, on ogee bracket feet
