This portrait will be sold with a letter from the William Simpson Galleries attesting that the painting was obtained from the "Austin Home", 1502 Market Street, Galveston, Texas.
Stephen Austin (1793-1836) was the founder of Texas. In 1822, he established the first legal settlement of 300 Anglo-American families in an area bordering on the Gulf of Mexico. Holding an extraordinary influence in government, Austin paved way for settlement by fixing the land system, mapping the province and charting its bays and rivers, establishing schools, maintaining a steady flow of immigrants and promoting trade with the United States.
