Half-titles. 403 lithographic plates printed in colours and finished by hand, with occasional heightening with gum-arabic, 26 folding, 3 uncoloured folding lithographic plates, numerous illustrations, some full-page. Contemporary green half morocco gilt bound for Prince Philip of the Belgians, the spine in five compartments with raised bands, the third with centrally-placed oval brown morocco onlay tooled with a crowned 'Ph', brown morocco lettering-piece in the second, volume number in the fourth, the others with repeat decoration of cornerpieces and fillets. Provenance: Philip, Prince of the Belgians, count of Flanders (1837-1905, binding).
AN EXCELLENT SET WITH A ROYAL PROVENANCE. Prince Philip was the second son of Leopold I, cousin to Queen Victoria and the father of Albert I, King of the Belgians. This fine periodical has a definite preference for the exotic: there are about 60 orchids shown, a similar number of brommeliads and many other plants suitable only for the hot-house in northern Europe. There is some confusion about the number of plates, caused by the double-numbering of most of the folding plates. Nissen calls for 430 plates and Stafleu and Cowan do not record a number of the folding double-numbered plates. Nissen BBI 2338; Stafleu & Cowan 4376. (4)
