PIERRE JOSEPH REDOUT (1759-1840)
[La Couronne des Roses dedi aux dames.... Paris: Rmond, c. 1825] 2 (473 x 330mm). 30 stipple-engraved plates on large paper after Redout by Bessin, Chardin, Couten, Langlois and Victor, printed in brown and hand-coloured under Redout's supervision. Contemporary mottled boards backed in red calf, spine titled and inscribed in gilt, mottled endpapers. Provenance: "A Mad. la Marquis de Tournon", presentation inscription lettered in gilt at base of spine.
A VERY RARE, SPECIAL EDITION OF LES ROSES consisting of the 30 best plates selected by Redout, printed on large paper and coloured to the highest state of perfection under his personal direction -- in effect, the epitome of the larger work, which had been published in Paris, 1817-24. The roses illustrated are: Rosa Gallica Aurelianensis; Rosa bifera officinalis; Rosa Pumila; Rosa Damascena Coccinea; Rosa Multiflora carnea; Rosa Centifolia prolifera foliacea; Rosa Indica Cruenta; Rosa mollissima; Rosa centifolia Bullata; Rosa Damascena; Rosa Campanulata alba; Rosa Pomponia; Rosa Damascena aurora; Rosa Centifolia carnea; Rosa Noisettiana; Rosa Centifolia Caryophyllea; Rosa alba foliacea; Rosa Gallica rosea flore simplici; Rosa Centifolia mutabilis; Rosa Gallica officinalis; Rosa Centifolia Anemonoides; Rosa Gallica; Rosa Damascena Variegata; Rosa Multiflora platyphylla; Rosa Bifera macrocarpa; Rosa centifolia; Rosa sulfurea; Rosa Muscosa alba; Rosa Carolina Corymbosa; and Rosa muscosa multiplex.
Although several bibliographies list this work as an addendum to descriptions of Les Roses, we have been unable to locate a copy in France, Britain or America. Dunthorne calls it "a special edition of part" of Les Roses "consisting of the 30 best plates selected by, and coloured under the personal supervision of Redout himself" -- and with the captions to the plates "printed in brown ink on large paper". He gives the wording of the title as "La Couronne des Roses. Dedi aux dames. Choix de trente roses tires de la Monographie de M. Redout, colories sous les yeux de l'auteur et publies en six livraisons." Whether Dunthorne had actually located a copy seems uncertain, however. One must deduce that the title to the work was only printed on the undated wrappers, and that there is no title page as such to the work, here bound in the form of an album. It is a work of quite legendary rarity, perhaps owing to financial failure or to the fact that Redout only wished to distribute copies to a select circle of friends. Dunthorne 232; Great Flower Books p. 72; Hunt Botanical Library Redoutana 61.
