CHARLES HAYES (1772-1826)
[Portraits of British Birds. London: n.d. but watermarked 1807-1808]. 4 (278 x 224mm). Manuscript title, 24pp. letterpress text on 12 leaves. 3 hand-coloured etched plates by Hayes, each within an ink-ruled border. (Small marginal tears to text pages 9/10 and 17/18.) 20th-century red half morocco gilt.
A possibly unique fragment of a work of great rarity. This is the first copy of this work to be confirmed as containing hand-coloured etchings as opposed to original drawings. The work was probably never completed and is known only from fragments containing varying numbers of original drawings and text leaves: the largest recorded selection consists of 144 original watercolours and 72 leaves of descriptive letterpress text (cf. Christie's, 25 October 1995 lot 17). Cf C.Jackson. Bird Etchings 1985, p.133-5; Nissen IVB 420; Wood p.503;
