Lot Essay

The plates executed after the drawings included in this group were issued over a number of years: May 1886 to November 1897, some after Keulemans had ceased to work for Lord Lilford.
It was Keulemans who first began work on the plates for Lord Lilford's publication, but because of illness he abandoned the project in 1887. At this time Wolf was too elderly to continue the commission and so Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) completed the drawings for the remaining plates. Maureen Lambourne in her book The Art of Bird Illustration, London, 1990, describes Lilford's publication as 'the last great series of bird prints of the century' (p. 176).
