maker's mark of William Holmes, London, 1795
Vase-shaped and on fluted spreading circular foot, chased with a band of berried laurel foliage on a matted ground, the partly fluted body with two leaf-capped loop handles and applied with ribbon-tied floral festoons and two plaques, one cast and chased with a drunken Silenus in a chariot drawn by bacchic leopards and with attendant putti, the other with a coat-of-arms, chased beneath the rim with a band of scrolling vines on a matted ground, the detachable spool-shaped cover chased with a band of scalework, and acanthus foliage, with partly fluted bud finial, engraved with two crests in oval cartouches, the foot later engraved with a presentation inscription, marked on foot and cover
