A black stone stele of Buddha Shakyamuni
Bengal, 11th Century
Finely carved seated in dhyanasana with his hands in bhumisparsa and dhyana mudras, on a double-lotus base supported by a lion in frontal view flanked by two further confronted lions divided by columns, wearing a finely pleated sanghati draped over his left shoulder, with a benign expression, tightly curled hair and a domed ushnisha, carved on the throne back with further miniature seated and standing Buddhas on lotus pedestals and flanked by two apsaras, all surmounted by the reclining Buddha in parinirvana, the plinth bearing an inscription
