The subject of the painting is extremely rare and recounted in the Harivamsa. Krishna stole the Parijita tree (the 'Wishing Tree') from Indra's heaven to prove his love for his third and favorite queen. Flowers from the tree could avert suffering, hunger, thirst, and old age and its removal precipitated an epic duel between Krishna and Indra causing the mountains to fall to earth. This scene illustrates the final outcome of the story, whereby Krishna and Satyabhama, riding on Garuda, return the purloined tree to Indra, who is mounted on the elephant Airavata before his celestial palace.
